New York Yankees VS Boston Red Sox

We were given last-minute tickets to the NY Yankees vs. Boston Red Sox game to be played Monday night at 7:00 pm to be attended after a long day on the Manhattan river cruise.  After a 35 minute sub ride to the beautiful Yankee stadium, we enjoyed a fun evening rooting for the home team; unfortunately, they lost 5 to 1. We sent a photo to our children--the best part was reading their "envious" comments!  Hope they can visit us and they attend a game first-hand!!
Boarded the #1 subway to Yankee Stadium Monday Night with Rogers, Grimleys, Calls and Hosacs; thanks to Elder and Sister Goo who graciously give us the tickets.

We've arrived on the "B" line

What every good baseball stadium needs is a Hard Rock Cafe adjacent.

Beautiful and gigantic stadium--quite a feat to walk up to the top tier!

Tele-tron was incredible!  Lots of spirit!

"A Rod" struck out 3 loaded bases!  Not a good night for him!

Boat Trip Around Manhattan Island

Interesting facts about New York City gleaned from the Circle Lines River Tour around the island:
  • New York City comprises five boroughs: Manhattan, Staten Island, Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens
  • Manhattan is 13 miles long
  • BMW helps us remember the three major bridges crossing the East River:  Brooklyn Bridge (read David McCullough's The Brooklyn Bridge for an interesting historical read of its construction), Manhattan Bridge and the Williamsburg Bridge)
  • Famous Intrepid ship which fought in WWII, Korean, and Vietnam wars plus used as a space recovery ship docked on the Hudson River.
  • 8.5 million people live in the 5 boroughs
  • 1.6 million live in Manhattan Island (70,000 people per square mile)
  • The Freedom Tower is the colloquial name for the One World Trade Center Building; may be the tallest building in Manhattan
  • Central Park is the most famous, visited and filmed park in the U.S.
A few photos below of our 2 1/2 hour boat ride:

Everyday Sites and Sounds...

Central Park on a Sunday Afternoon-no dogs allowed

Famous renovated restaurant and gardens in Central Park...ate a lovely meal there.
100 yards away, 100 yrs ago, sheep graised in this meadow (now Central Park)
People, buildings, and dogs everywhere...all so interesting and varied...

Each dog owner was only too pleased to have me take a photo of his or her dog;  we've never seen so many varieties of dog in our lives!  Each was so unique and smartly groomed.  Central Park seems to be the showcase of dogs and their owners!!

THE POPE IS COMING...THE POPE IS HERE..AND WILL PASS 1 BLOCK AWAY FROM US...

After a long temple shift, we needed to stretch our legs and walked 1 block toward Central Park tonight. The city is preparing for the Pope's motorcade which will pass 1 block away from our apt.

No parking allowed around the perimeter of Central Park.
Signs surround the park...can you imagine what all this protection is costing the city?
A 50 foot police van parked perpendicular to the park, just down the street from us on 66th street.  They are ready for any incident.
All for the Pope!  So happy President Monson is securely nestled in his humble apartment in SLC.

A Sunset Walk-About...Again

Again, I love the old, quaint churches surrounded by skyscrapers...hoping they are never leveled in the name of progress.

I always remember the "Brownstones" in old Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire movies.  We passed by a whole row of them...love them...they really are brown.

Found a favorite pizza place...cheap and the best ever.  $4.59 for one slice...yummy and close to home. To top it off, he found his favorite Seagrams Ginger Ale.

Crossed the street to explore cultural opportunities of the Met, the NY Philharmonic, and the NY Ballet.  Each of the major arts has its own building/monument which surround this beautiful square and fountain.

We really are literally across the street from the world's cultural center..orchestra, ballet, theater and opera!!   Unfortunately, the tickets are sky high (Swan Lake is performing tonight at $198 per ticket); however, another tender mercy occurred today.  I met a sister in the temple dressing room who works at the NY Philharmonic, and she told me about $20 tickets available (called Open Rehearsals) about twice a month to sit in on the dress rehearsals of the NY Philharmonic Orchestra at 9:45 am.  The only rub is that we are unavailable to attend until we rotate to the afternoon temple schedule in December...we'll be there then!
